Green plum

Green plum (scientific name: Vatica mangachapoi Blanco) is a kind of arbor of genus Vatica in family Dipterocarpaceae, with a height of about 20 meters. Its branchlets are covered with stellate tomentum. Its leaf blade is leathery, oblong to oblong lanceolate, with leaf top being acuminate or mucronate and base being round or cuneate. Both surfaces are protuberant, on which reticulate veins are obvious, and the petiole is densely covered with grayish yellow short tomentum. Its panicle is acrogenous or axillary, the calyx lobes are valvate, ovate lanceolate or oblong, with both surfaces densely covered with stellate tomentum or scaly tomentum; the petals are white, sometimes faint yellow or light red, fragrant, oblong or linear spatulate, the filaments are short, the anthers are oblong, the ovary is spherical with dense short tomentum, and the fruit is spherical; its flowering season is from December to January, and the fruiting season is from April to May.

It is distributed in Hainan, China. It grows in the forest of hills and slopes with altitude below 700 meters. It is also distributed in Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, etc.

The heartwood of green plum, which is large and resistant to corrosion and moisture, is an excellent material for fishing ship; of which the wood shuttle can be made in textile industry and ruler, tripod, gunstock and other arts and crafts in industry.
